Meitheal is one of the clearest Irish ways to explain time banking. Traditionally, neighbours came together to help with work that was too much for one household alone. The work mattered, but so did the relationship.

Modern time banking is not the same thing, and it should not romanticise the past. But the shared principle is strong: communities become more resilient when people help one another in organised, reciprocal ways.

## From Informal Help to Recorded Exchange

A traditional Meitheal relied on memory, trust and social expectation. A timebank adds a simple record. When someone gives an hour, that hour is recognised as a time credit.

This record can make participation easier for people who are new to a place or not already part of established social circles.

## Keeping the Spirit, Updating the Structure

The challenge for TimeBank Ireland is to keep the warmth of neighbourly help while making the system accessible to modern life. People are busy, communities are more mobile and not everyone knows who to ask.

A timebank can help by making offers visible, requests normal and contribution easier to recognise.

## Where TimeBank Ireland Fits

The Meitheal tradition reminds us that mutual aid is not imported or abstract. It is already part of Irish community memory. TimeBank Ireland gives that memory a practical modern form.
