It works and we use it ourselves, but this is its first public release and the app is still being built. Expect a few rough edges, and a few things that are not there yet. If something goes wrong, it is far more likely to be us than you.

An iPhone and iPad version is built from the same app and is very nearly ready. What is left is the Apple side — finishing our developer account setup and passing their review — so we are not putting a date on it yet, but it is the next thing we are releasing.

Not working properly yet

iPhone, iPad and Mac. Saving TimeBank Ireland to an Apple device does not work properly at the moment. We know about it, we are working on it, and we will update this page as soon as it is sorted.

In the meantime TimeBank Ireland works normally in Safari and every other browser on Apple devices. You just cannot reliably save it as an app icon yet.

We will keep this page up to date as each option becomes available.

## Why is it harder on Apple devices?

It is mostly Apple's own rules rather than anything unusual about TimeBank Ireland. There are three of them, and together they explain the whole problem:

1. There is no one-tap install. On Android and Windows the browser can offer a button that does it for you. Apple has never allowed that, so on an Apple device it has to be done by hand through the Share menu.
2. On an iPhone or iPad it only works in Safari. Chrome and Firefox on Apple devices cannot save a website as an app at all — Apple does not let them. On a Mac you need Safari 17 or newer.
3. Even when it works, Apple treats the saved app as a separate program from Safari and keeps its data apart. So the app opens logged out and you have to sign in again inside it, which understandably feels like something is broken.

None of that applies to the proper app described below — on Apple devices that is the real answer, and it is nearly finished.

## The three kinds of app, explained simply

People say "app" for two quite different things, and it is worth knowing which is which. In short: the home-screen version is here today and the proper app is nearly finished.

Nothing to install and nothing to download. Open the website in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox and everything works. This is how most members use TimeBank Ireland.

### The website saved to your home screen

This is not a separate program — it is this same website, saved to your device as its own icon. Tap the icon and TimeBank Ireland opens full screen with no address bar, so it looks and feels like an app. It takes almost no storage and it updates itself, so there is nothing to keep downloading. The proper name for it is a PWA, short for Progressive Web App, and it is the option that works today.

### The proper app, from the app store

A real, separate app — the kind you get from Google Play or Apple's App Store and that sits alongside your other apps. Developers call this a native app, meaning it is built with the phone's own tools rather than being a website in disguise. That is what lets it feel faster, use your camera and photos properly, and deliver notifications reliably even when it is closed. We have built one: it is on Google Play for Android now, and the iPhone and iPad version is very nearly ready.

Being honest about the order: Android is live, and the download link and QR code are at the top of this page. The iPhone and iPad version is built from the same app, but Apple requires a developer account and reviews every app before it can be published, so it follows next. We will add a link here the moment it is available.

## How to add it to your home screen

Choose your device below. We have picked the one you appear to be using.

Android iPhone or iPad Windows Mac

### Windows computer

1. Open this page in Chrome or Edge.
2. Look at the right-hand end of the address bar for the install icon: a small screen with an arrow pointing down into it.
3. No icon there? Open the three-dot menu. In Chrome choose "Cast, save and share", then "Install page as app". In Edge choose "Apps", then "Install this site as an app".
4. Click "Install". It opens in its own window and appears in your Start menu.

### Cannot find the option?

Usually that means one of three things: the app is already installed on this device, your browser is out of date, or your browser does not support it. Updating your browser to the latest version fixes it most of the time.
